First I thought it was nice to find locations nearby. Especially restaurants, petrol stations, etc. If possible with some comments from friends. But after investigating Gowalla a bit further I noticed the business model had nothing to do with finding new locations. They want you to buy virtual goods and drop them on locations for people to find. The in app purchase via the iphone serves this model perfectly.

For me this raises the question that Gowalla doesn’t stimulate finding a good restaurant or finding nearby petrol stations but they want to create another stupid social game. And I’m not in the target audience as it doesn’t deliver any added value to me.

If you read the article by Jeff Atwood you will notice it is gambling. Even when the Flipz contract states:

According to me this last drawback is another hidden apple tax. Off course this revenue model is picked up by other laptop manufactures. To replace the battery of the new DELL Adamo you need to send it back to DELL. The price is not yet defined.

It is not only the price I mind. But you also lose an important tool you use in everyday life. I’m self employed and I can’t afford to mis my number 1 tool for even 1 day.

PS: Same goes for my iphone…

Today I enrolled into the iphone developer program. I have registered my company to publish iphone applications so I paid 99$. Well I registered and they told me to wait until they did some checks. It could take some days but at least I did not have to pay upfront J

I’m actually very interested in playing with OS 3.0. It has all those new features and new opportunities.

I don’t really understand all these negative comments on the new aluminum macbooks. Especially the normal macbooks. Yes they don’t have firewire: buy the pro version. Yes they have shiny screens which I don’t like either.

But overall it is a nice experience working with the macbook, it’s trackback and the OS.

I come from years of Linux usage from Redhat 4.1 onwards until fedora when I switched to debian and later to ubuntu. I only used windows on my gaming PC. I have endured some VISTA on my job.

Just to give a personal positive experience which worked out fine in my case with my settings and versions:

I was installing several font managers to test them out. I have installed the free Linotype. After reboot I got the blue screen. I could start and take a backup of my important files. It would be safer to use time machine. But I only bought one USB disk and preferred to take backups of my wifes macbook. Hers is more “mission critical”.

I uninstalled the culprit but still it would not boot my system in normal mode. So I reinstalled macosx with the archive and install option. After this it would boot in normal mode and all my programs and settings where migrated.

My wife will switch to a macbook too. I need to import a 8 GB pst file and 50+ mail rules. I will write a howto post if I pull this of.

In MBA courses there is a big chunk of reading and interpreting the numbers. Change a few modifiers and get a instant result.

They forget the most important part of doing business: the customer. They trim quality, customer service and all the other things customers really care about.

Take banks for example for years they are pushing you to do your banking on-line. This way they can cut down on employees. The only face to face contact you will have with your bank is a sales rep who tries you to sell a complicated investment product that they don’t even fully understand.

Well shame on those banks. shame on alle the board of directors who approved to the fact the CFO is actually running the company. Lets focus on the only thing that really counts in business: Creating value for the customer.

In simple terms this meant that I thought my hand was more worth in my mind than in reality. When I was 12 my grand father wanted to learn me the basic principles of economy where he explained me the consumer theory and the indifference curve. These are very scientific and statistical measurable theories.

But they forgot the human aspect. Strange psychological behaviour kicks in and people are more committed to goods they already own and value them higher than a equal good not in their possession. They tried to prove this theory with psychological behavioural tests. This field is called Behavioural Economics.

Off course there are scientific researchers questioning this endowment effect. But in my personal opinion it explains being “pot committed” in Texas Hold em. Being informed you should recognize this behaviour in your game plan and avoid this at all costs. In a next post I will explaining hand odds and probabilities.
